Do the Japanese send text messages?
Only they don't seem to have enough words or letters on their buttons. How can this be enough letter combinations to send a coherent message?
Unless the Japanese language is so streamlined they can get by with only ten words. Actually, thinking about it, we only use ten words when texting anyway.

Well, to provide a serious answer to a light-hearted question, clearly the Japanese don't have a key for every kanji character; a mobile phone with 6000 keys on would be probably about the same size as a broadsheet newspaper (although much more cool, natch). So instead they divide the Japanese language into syllables (of which they only have 52 combinations). So, you key in "sh" plus "i" which generates the syllable "shi" (no, really)... you then just have to scoll through the appropriate meanings of the word shi, which include, but are not limited to: "four", "death", "town", "reverend", "poetry", "nature", "letter" and "haemorrhoid". So, no chance of confusion there then.
Still, the idea of the ten fixed textable words is a good one, although in the case of the Japanese you would need to include "bondage" and "sea urchin"... mind you, their trains are never late so you could save a couple of words there...

Also to add to the aforementioned explanation, my last entry level phone had you basically type phonetically s->h->i as you would on your phone, and it then shoves the character in (on the press of the final letter).
Of course where we have capital letters in English, they have 2 alphabets and a Chinese writing system. So - you basically write in one system and convert that into Chinese characters, or opt for the last alphabet, identical to the first one in composition, but which looks totally different.
More commonly though, Japanese people will simply take photos of everything. If you ever see something beautiful, or some live event, you will see it through about 64 little screens infront of you. Like techno-spiders see the world.
Apparently the CHinese use a similar system to the Japanese. (I wondered about this a while back, so asked someone.)

Or you could use the stroke method (works for Chinese, and since Japanese is just a bastardisation of the language we would imagine it would work there). For example, T has a horizontal stroke (Top) and a verticle stroke(Middle). Tow key presses. The romanisation version by 'father viv' is for those too lazy to use this. Stop with the sense, show us examples of sex messages using only your ten word vocabulary.
The people above are either drunk or stupid. On a japanese mobile there are buttons for each consonant in Japanese (for there are not many of them), and then you press each button depending on which vowel you want to combine with them, in the order AIUEO. So, to select the above 'shi' you'd press the 's' consonant buttons twice. Then you can select the actual word from the phonetic transcription.
One thing the Japanese don't do, however, is buy Nokia phones. This is perhaps a far more important point than anyone has made in this thread so far. They don't really do MMS either as they have 'proper' email. And they don't buy Vodafone phones eitherbecause the 3G reception is disastrous (walk inside a building, kiss any reception goodbye!)
