Sony's still making mini disc players from new!

This is like that time we had a web site that wouldn't stop talking about Sega hardware nobody was interested in.

MZ-RH1 Hi-MD mini disc player

The best news is it uses Sony's new "ATRAC" encoding format, which is sure to take over from MP3 as the world's most popular shared music system (Copyright 1999).

SONY BRINGS STUDIO SOUND TO NEW Hi-MD WALKMAN, Mar 23, 2006

“Hi-MD is light years ahead of alternative formatting technologies such as HDD and Flash, making the MZ-RH1 the clear choice for professionals and music fans alike” – Yoshiaki Kadokura (Vice President, Personal Audio Europe, Sony)

Berlin, 23rd March 2006 - Taking playback sound quality to another level, Sony today announced the latest addition to its family of Hi-MD™ Walkman® digital music players. The sleek and slimline MZ-RH1 builds on the success of its predecessor. Listeners can now enjoy unsurpassable CD-quality sound whether they are playing back music recorded at a live music concert or selecting from their personal music library.

The MZ-RH1 is a digital audio player that can play files downloaded in LinearPCM, ATRAC (ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus) or MP3 format, or which have been recorded onto the device from a live music session. Sony has improved the recording experience with several enhancements. Users can adjust the mode to reflect what they are recording, which could be a live event, their own ‘jam’ session, or even a business meeting - creating crystal clear playback sound. The MZ-RH1 also features different listening modes to complement musical genres and create the right acoustic atmosphere, including “Club”, “Jazz” and “Pop”.

The competitive price belies the MZ-RH1’s professional capabilities. The iconic Sony design with the spectrum analyser display encases a pocket size recording studio. Usability for professionals has also improved, moving the buttons to enable easy operation, and building in a backlight function so that the product can be used in a dark recording studio. Sony has the advantage on the market for studio quality sound thanks to its Hi-MD next-generation formatting technology. Harnessing over 14 years of research and development, Hi-MD evolved Sony’s popular MiniDisc into a multi-purpose medium for storing audio, text and image data. Hi-MD uses the uncompressed LinearPCM format so music can be recorded and played back with the same sound quality as the original source. The MZ-RH1 will be available from May 2006 across Europe.

Key product features include:

* The device is also now offered with Mac compatibility, bringing greater choice in digital audio devices to Mac users. The Mac application can be downloaded from the MZ-RH1 page on the Sony websites and support website: http://www.sonydigital-link.com, from summer 2006
* Users can now revive their old mini disc libraries as digital music by uploading music to the PC
* Ultra slim and compact body – measures just 14.7mm
* Supplied with high power headphones offering treble and bass sound, and a remote control for easy listening and playback
* Rechargeable battery offers a battery life of 19 hours
* Removable media format offers unlimited storage capacity - one 1GB mini-disc can hold up to 45 hours of music
* Dynamic normalizer automatically uniformises the sound volume of each recorded track to a listenable level
* High capacity coupling condenser allows an authentic reproduction of bass
* PC data storage (Windows/Mac)
* HD digital amplifier
* Hi-Speed USB (compatible with USB2.0 specification)

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but bear with me.
I'm thinking a shallow plastic box containing a length of thin plastic film tape wound round two spools.
Live music, perhaps from your own 'jam' session, could be encoded on an iron oxide based coating on the thin film tape, which could be spooled past sensors for playback.
I know it's thinking out of the box. But I thought I just had to put it out on the stoop to see if the cat ran it up the flagpole

For a long time I've been thinking about a rotating wax cylinder, that can be played by a needle sitting on it picking up the encoded grooves, but this idea blows mine out of the water!

It's at the top of the flagpole, and scared for it's life!

A dark recording studio? Brilliant! That will come in handy for my photophobic Stratocaster.

CURSE YOU Sony FOR MAKING ME HAVE TO RUB MYSELF
The fact is, that although its a mini disc player, and although the press release is so bad, it does look very good -- so good that you just want to spurt your man-fat all over its mat black niceness.
Once again Sony design a bad product beautifully -- and we hate them for the feelings doing that stirs in us.
Or is that just me?

Finally, a product I can use in my dark recording studio! Better still, every time I want to change CD I have to mess about looking through my bag for tiny little plastic things with hastily scrawled labels.

PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999

AVAILABLE SUMMER 2006! like i don't have enough to wank about given the fact that i have a mac in the first place!

i've had two sony minidisc players and they both broke. they decided that rather than PLAY my minidiscs they would ERASE them instead. i've also had an aiwa one too which just decided not to turn on any more. so we don't like minidisk players.

mp3 players on the other hand. i've had a 2nd generation iPod. that was great until the battery decided it was only going to last 20 minutes on each charge. then i had a 3rd generation iPod which decided to sit on the top of my car while i got inside then LEAP from the roof when i drove off...

i don't have a high success rate with portable music players. WOMEN however, are a completely different story.

Completely true about nicely designed bad products. I've got one of those Netowrk Walkmans that only use the Atrac format and the Sonic Stage software and it is shite. I mean really shite. Annoyingly so.
Buuuttt, it looks nice and the screen is very well done.

Damn you matt category, damn you to hell. Your "top of the flagpole" comment made me laugh so hard that the huge lump of swedish tobaco under my upper lip went liquid filling my mouth with acidic goo. Thanks a lot buddy.

And victor... don't even get me started on the utter wankability of this little gem. As I was skimming the press blurb all I could think was ...mmmm mat black.
Why can't Sony just make these things empty inside? Just a little battery to make the lights go on and off, and some lead to make it nice and heavy in your hand. That way you would not have to worry about malfunction if it was exposed to erm.. liquids.

Just had to put it out there to see if the flagpole runs up the cat.

I can't believe what a bunch of clueless people you are!... the ignorant "enlightening" the ignorant.

Minidisc is niche technology. It's like HP calculators for those who really want to be efficient crunching numbers: once you are exposed to one you never ever look for anything else. Such is the case with Hi-Fi recording and minidisc technology. For its portability, flexibility and cost there is nothing out there that can do what it does. Get a good pro mic and you're done.

So it would pay off to all you people to do a little research into what minidisc actually does before you go out in bashing mode based solely on your arrogant ignorance.

... I'll say more: you are so bloody unknowledgable about it that you are not even aware of it the slightest!... now, that's a worry.

**cough** **splutter** **choke** who was that last anonymous?? Sorry mate but were you being paid too much money by sony to come along and herald the virtues of their wonder dog???

I've encountered a lot of dross in my life, but it must be said that there is but one truth about shite. "You can't polish it, but a little bit sure does spread a long way"

Sony in my opinion, have an interesting success rate. George Bush has probably had more Christmas dinners with Bin Laden than Sony have produced moving part components that actually survive regular or "normal" usage. I must have worked with 20 Sony Mini-Disk Player/Recorder in Portable and Studio Rack units, before I simply gave up of a boss in Radio ever agreeing to buy digitial or simply stick with R2R....

So for those that doubt, I say pick up the manual and a single disk. Then go through each of the functions it gives. By my reconing, an hour of life and a disk will have been wasted. The stupid machine will undoubtedly have TOCed for an age before the disk forgot its primary function in life.

Grab those Cats, fly them high and bring back the wheel!!!

I've had a NetMD since they came out (about 6 years now), and it still works.

This thing has had dirt from 7 countries, sand from iraq, and snow from Bosnia in it and it still works perfectly (I was a soldier in the British Army).

I think its a good idea, but yet again another Sony product which is superior but suffers from bad PR. (Think Betamax vs VHS, MD vs MP3 Player & soon to be Blu-Ray vs HD - You know which is going to win!)

NetMD are much better then the original MD (with 1:1 recording ratio!), and I think this is a great evolution.

HOWEVER......... Sonicstage software just simply sucks! I use Real One player to transfer, as I cant stand Sonicstage (aka MemoryHog) as it crashes my system 7 out of 10 times.

Different EQ settings such as "club", "jazz", and "pop"? I need one!

"Unsurpassable CD-quality sound"? As in, unsurpassable in 1980, when the CDDA standard was finalised? I smell an oxymoron.

Just to put in a polite dissension. The Mini-Disc player excels as a field recording device. I spent two weeks in northern Mongolia, and it performed like a trooper, despite the fact that my only source of electricity was a AA solar battery charger. I got beautiful, clean recordings that I treasure. Since I transferred some of my favorite CDs to minidiscs, I was also able to listen to and share my own music.

Currently, I use it as a small recorder for workshops and other program items. Its small, unobtrusive size means that people tend to forget it's there. A recorder and hours of media fits in the palm of my hand, which makes it great for travelling.

I also own an iPod, and I use it for listening to podcasts and music, but my minidisc player is my recorder of choice. It's just so damned GOOD at what it does.

My current minidisc player is the old NETMD version, but I plan to get a HD minidisc player as soon as I can afford one.

This whole deal with "reviving" your old NetMD disc is a load of BS.I have tried over and over and it simply would NOT let me do it.If anyone has any suggestions on this matter it woukld be greatly appreciated!
