Bang & Olufsen has made a mobile phone

It's called the Serene. It was made in partnership with Samsung, probably because Bang & Olufsen, when it comes down to it, doesn't know as much about doing telephones as it does about making CD players that fold open into a flower and spray perfume into the nose of the listener.

Bang & Olufsen (really 90% Samsung) Serene mobile

We'd imagine Samsung made it all work and did the hard electric bits, while the design ponces at B&O minced about for years talking about "neo classical" lines and "modernised textures". For some reason, this bit of plastic costs $1275 and is almost certainly not available on Pay As You Go from Argos.

IT HAS A FLASH WEB SITE THAT LOOKS LIKE IT'S FROM 1998:

Not worth nicking.

Well it would be, but they'd be no-one stupid enough to pay any decent money to buy it off you.

Load of arty wank really.

The same idiot who thought that two vertical columns of numbers was a good idea on this landline

The CEO at our office bought one of these as he has to have the latest gadget, and made our Helpdesk spend a few days trying set it up for him, which they never managed to do completely.

Turns out that the thing costs £800 and a pay as you go phone from Argos has more features and also the few features this piece of shit does have don't actually work properly, like the calendar syncronisation feature which requires separate software, that dosen't come with the phone and you can't get from the supplier, or anywhere else for that matter.

Still the CEO doesn't mind that much as he's already ordered his new toy. . . . a Bugatti Veyron.

The git!

I've got an Alcatel! But then I do live in Italy at the moment. It's called THE BLACK KNIGHT.

Do you have to speak into the screen? How does that work? And how the fuck are you meant to dial numbers into the top half of a flip phone?

How fucking much?

If B&O's phones are the same as their TVs, you should be able to whip the kitschy lid off and marvel at about two hundred Philips logos.

It looks like the box that you get when you buy an engagement ring.

"Will you marry me? Oh shit I've rung my boss"

Can't buy an engagement ring after spending that much on a 'orrible phone anyway.

Yikes! I don't know what's worse, someone seeing you with this phone, or you admitting what you actually paid for it!

I can't beleive what everyone is saying about the "Serene" mobile and Bang & Olufsen. They are the only company that makes a decent TV and decent picture. If people really think that its a "Philips" TV or parts from Phillips then they are more stupid than most of the people writing on this site. Bang & Olufsen get a brand like "Samsung" to make them a screen to their specification, NOT the screen that "Samsung" use for themself. The "Serene" works really well and the texting is very easy. The reason why they make a circle for the numbers or 2 colums on their other telephone is because they want to be different and not like evryone else. The people moaning about Bang & Olufsen are people that could never afford B&O or don't have any taste. Get a life! Best manufacturer by far considering that all other companys are mass producing cheap plastic TV's.

...so the fact that Philips (just the one 'l' by the way) is a shareholder in B&O is just a coincidence?

I CAN afford B&O but choose to steer clear. Shoppers don't be fooled by the fancy exterior.

Hopefully I can clear up some of the confusion in this blog. Philips is a shareholder in B & O, but only as an investor. Philips has no input in day-to-day operations and does not manufacture any products for B & O. It is true that several years ago they did provide some video components that were incorporated into a certain model Television. All current Beovision Plasma Panels are manufactured by Panasonic. That is not to say it just a Panasonic TV, I mean the panel only. Other circuitry a video processing is done in house at B & O's facility. With regard to the Serene Mobile Phone, this is the only jointly manufactured product between B & O and Samsung. There is no other relationship between B & O and Philips. Other entities such as "Ice Power" is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bang & Olufsen. "Ice Power" technology has been incorporated into several Beolab Loudspeakers including a complete Mobile Audio System in the Audi A8. B & O manufactures many components in their own facility with some componentry manufactured in other countries. All final product assembly is done in B & O's own facilities. I hope this information is helpful to you!

Stunning design and function. Just what a phone should be. The price is to keep it out of the hands of you unappreciative school dropouts.

I'm in Australia and just bought the Serene amongst all the iPhone 3G hype. I own an iPod and a MacBook Pro so even though the iPhone is cool I don't need it. The Serene is definitely a designer phone. It's not intentioned to compete with the current range of cheap plastic phones on the market so while some people may question it's price tag compared to it's features the best I can say is it is like choosing to buy your jeans from K-Mart or D&G, they're still jeans but quality, craftsmanship and style is the difference between the two. The round dial is a breeze to use for both navigating the menu and sending text messages. It takes a little getting use to, but within a day I had it down pat. Sound quality is amazing! I have never used a mobile phone that is so crystal clear and with great reception (but then it is Bang & Olufsen). Bluetooth set up was no issue with my Mac pairing within seconds and setting up SMS and MMS was a breeze because the Serene already has it within it's software for each mobile network, all I had to do was select which one I am using in the settings menu and click activate. The Serene is light weight and compact so carrying it around in my pocket or in my hand is a pleasure. The casing has a velvety smooth finish that is truly unique and is scratch proof as is the tempered glass screen. The Serene is a phone that states "I am successful and refuse to blend in with the crowd". Owning one is a pleasure. You get what you pay for and I certainly did with my Serene.
