Commodore Evic MP3 player - exclusive reader accidental purchase review!

A reader bought a cheap MP3 player. Turned out it was a Commodore Evic. Here is a review of how rubbish it is:
I bought a 20GB "generic mp3 player" off of some website for £50 because I work in a pub and have no money. Upon opening the box, it turned out to be a Commodore Evic (see attached photo) which I remember you mentioning some time ago, but you couldn't purchase as the website crashed.

So, so you can see what you missed, here are the features of this "amazing" mp3 player:

Commodore Evic

1. Can only be charged in the white docking thing, with an obscenely large mains plug. No cigarette lighter charging here!

2. Battery lasts all of 8 hours. Fortunately, I'm too skint to go on 14 hour flights to Brazil so this is not a problem.

3. You can load up m3u playlists, but it only plays one song at a time. When one song finishes, you manually have to select playlist, select the next song, and press play. Rubbish.

4. It took me two days to work out where the shuffle setting was

5. The manual says you can download upgrades at http://www.commodoreworld.com. Sadly, Commodore has erased all trace of the Evic from this website. Hopefully, it'll fuck up badly before the warranty expires and I can have my money back to buy an iRiver off Ebay or something.

6. Are you supposed to be able to hear the hard drive clicking?

What a great review! If you've bought something shit and you'd like to send us a review of it, send us a review of it.

Hey, if you want to get your money back on that, by law you can return it within about 7 or 14 days and state "NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE" and get a full refund. There's a 1975 (approx) consumer law for this which means the seller is legally obliged to give you your money back. There's a free Government helpline which you can call to confirm these details, apologies I haven't got the info to hand.

I thought it was crap. He couldn't even be bothered to have the helpline number to hand. If this was real life I'd box his ears.

What anonymous meant to say was:

According to the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended by the Sale & Supply of Goods Act 1994 and the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002), the good have to be:

* Of satisfactory quality

* Fit for the purpose

* As described

For points 2 and 3, you might be able to say it's not fit for purpose. For point 5, you might be able to say it's not as described. And a clicking hard drive (point 6) sounds like it's not of satisfactory quality. This law might only apply if the website was British, but it's worth checking, and their should be similar laws in other countries.

I once did work experience with Trading Standards, so I know. And I've seen Watchdog on the telly.

The 7 or 14 day thing has nothing to do with it, if it's broken or has been mis-sold, they must give a refund if you want. Sometimes a shop will let you have a refund for something if you return it on good condition within 28 days or something, but that's just the shop being nice, goodwill and all.

Here's more info:

http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/calitem.cgi?file=ADV0043-1011.txt

Blimey, a serious reply!

Well, there's that sales of distance law thing. Where anything you buy over the internet can be returned within 7 days due to it being bought over the internet and not in a brick and mortar shop.

As for another crap MP3 player. The Sony Walkman NWA range. And its not just because its Sony. It really is crap. They fail to understand any concept of userbility.

This is a Chinese off-the-shelf Commodore MP3 player... a heritage from the Tulip days. The company which now owns the Commodore brand is making serious efforts to rejuvenate the brand with a wifi enabled player called Gravel In Pocket. Check out: http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/31/commodore-announces-gravel-in-pocket-device/

Anonymous: wow, awesome consumer advice there. This is why we no longer need Watchdog .

Anonymous: Have you any idea how ace with retro-cool I look to people of a certain/age demographic listening to headphones with a Commodore C< on them? When I say "listen" I actually mean "try to work out what song is playing through the hissing and stuttering"

Anonymous: Yes

Well, someone should give the other side of the story - ME!

I have one of these wonderful little devices and am WELL pleased with it.

Main reason? Simple. Unlike my wife's ipod or my other mp3 player I can arrange my mp3 collection into folders the way I (!!!!) want it and then simply copy the folders across to the evic. What a difference this makes. Instead of having to screw around for hours looking for that !one! song that itunes decided to hide under an obscure ID3 tag somewhere I can simply go to where !I! placed the track - and there it is.

Yes, the docking cradle is a bit of a bore but on the other hand, you can listen to your music while the device is charging - again unlike an ipod!

Noisy? No more than any other disk-drive based MP3 player.

Battery life? Great - unless you spend the whole of the time loading files on to it without the external mains supply - in which case, yes, batter life is short.

Overall, except for the non-existent website this is a great product I would recommend to anyone.

I got one of these mp3 players for xmas and I like it! The shuffle is to be found when you hold down menu, go to set up, repeat and then set random to on.
What do you expect for the money? you get 20GB for less than £60! my hubby has ipod and you have to buy cover, charger and everything seperate so it cost almost 4 times as much!

Alright alright I was being harsh, it is a nice feeling when someone shows me their ipod, then brags about the 2gb memory and how they got it for "under a hundred quid" And then I snigger because it doesn't play OGG files, while the eVic technically does.

Can anyone tell me how to make the playlists play rather than stop after each song?

I made the mistake of gettin one, battery lasts 6 hours (4 bursts of playing songs), it won't dock with WMP ver 11 and no web support.
It sucks

don't touch it at all

You guys think this player is bad? Try buying a Thomson Lyra PDP2842U! I had one, and the firmware is the shittiest/crashiest ever, and Thomson's support team are a bunch of bored uninterested school leavers!

I bought an eVIC, and it is sooo much better, it doesn't crash, the quality is awesome, sound and build is way better. The cradle is annoying, a cable equivalent would be better.

The hard drive does click, but only when it spins up and down. Other than that, it is as quiet as a mouse, and battery life is excellent. As for Commodore wiping it from their website, that doesn't bother me, as the firmware is fine, unlike my old Thomson (on which the HD died without warning, and lost me 20GB of data and music)

Ahh! I'm confused! I saw this mp3 player today for £50. I'm a student so I don't have a lot of money to spend but desperately want an mp3 player with a lot of storage space. Now I don't know whether to get it or not. On the one hand I can store loads of music but then will I encounter all the problems described above? But then some people seem to like it. Help!

I've had the eciv since xmas 2006 and was very impressed with its value for mony aspect.
Unfortunately it has started to freeze more and more often over the last month requiring a reset to clear the error.(hold "stop"+"menu" for 10 sec)
Extremly annoying and can't find my recipt!!!!

I've had one for about the last 6 months. Acquired for £35, factory reconditioned and cannot speak highly enough of it. Battery life seems to be excellent as is sound quality and the voice recorder microphone can only be classed as exceptional in the detail it can deliver upon playback of recorded files.The Commodore branded headphones are deliver pretty poor sound quality however, a quick swap to the no-brand headphones from my previous MP3 player yielded a very good reproduction of the music files.........blah, blah, blah.

I think it's great and I am a bit of a hi-fi geek, so there.

Bought one as a gift. It worked OK for just under a year. Was OK until the HDU started refusing to boot. Repeated retries got it working.
Expecting the harddrive to die any minute.
Disk head sounds like it is seeking / retrying around disk faults.
When it finally fails I shall struggle to find something comparable. Any good 10Gb+, OGG compatible suggestions?

CHeck out wikipedia to see that a common problem with the ivec is that after a coule months a lot of these things just stop working. It says hdd drive error and locks up. I was about to throw mine away but I figured I would try some experiments on it. I started banging it around and after quite a few blows it started working again. I don´t know how long it will work for but at least I could rescue some music and other stuff off it. The one thing I loved about this player is that it showed up just like another hard drive in MyPC and you just had to drag and drop files in . Then on the unit itself you just looked for folder you copied. I now have a Zen Vision that is pretty nice but I miss my old evic´s filing system a lot.
