Should our next camera be a Nikon Coolpix P5000?

Only it looks quite nice. Can the people who seem to know about cameras please post some comments in the comments section about if this is better than the Canon Powershot A710IS we're currently planning to get in about five weeks. Thanks.

Nikon Coolpix P5000

It has image stabilisation, 10 megapixels, 3.5x zoom and, most importantly, looks a bit edgy in its black finish. Please make the decision for us.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH:
  • The Westover FBP-P5000 Dual Magnification Digital Inspection Probe
  • The P5000 Champion Ladies' Stretch Fleece Pants
  • The P5000 Multi-function meter
  • The Pipetman Classic P5000 Fully Adjustable Air Displacement Pipette
  • The Zvetco Biometrics P5000 Fingerprint Device
  • The Accuphase P5000 Stereo Power Amplifier

  • The Accuphase P5000 Stereo Power Amplifier

The Accuphase P5000 Stereo Power Amplifier. Seems to be made by using two old speedometers from a 1963 Volvo 122.

Am I the only one who can see a face in the amp? It's quite a happy face though, so that's nice.

But... the P5000 takes a Lithium battery. Have you converted to the dark side?

Does it come bundled with the fleece pants? It's not a deal-breaker, but I'd like to know.

I don't know anything interesting about cameras and I can't see a face in the amp but this is my birthday update, so I thought I'd add a comment.
I went to Liverpool yesterday (20th) for the day, as it was my birthday. A man tried to sell us "steaks from Sainsbury's" in a pub. I'm sure this is just a case of Sainsbury's piloting a new convenient shopping scheme and not merely Liverpudlians reverting to type.

I don't like any of the "in between compacts and DSLR" cameras. Plus my brother has a Nikon and it is all plastic.

If you want to pay £300 for a small lens and crap zoom, go ahead...

Mind you, the word verification says: sqyes!

    Mostly_harmless_uk's P5000 'review'/advice.

    Good Things:

Proper controls (PSAM) as well as the chav-tastic 'special' modes for 'special' people.

'Proper' viewfinder for when it's sunny and you can't see the screen, or when you turn the screen off to save power.

Higher ISO-range than the Canon, again handy for use in the dark of your basement. Might get a bit noisy though.

Got a proper 'hot-shoe' which the Canon hasn't, which makes it look more hardcore/worth nicking. Add a seperate flash gun that does 'bounce' (like the ickle Nikon SB-400) so you can avoid horrendous dark shadows around people. This is especially useful when doing home-made porn, incidentally.

Bound to be easier to use than the Canon, as Nikons always are. (Tip: with any modern Nikon, DSLR or compact, if you set all of the switches with options that are coloured green to, umm, green, then the camera will do everything else for you. Well, everything photographic anyway. Except pressing the shutter button obviously. You people have to take some responsibility too).

Doesn't look like its been left near a radiator (unlike the Canon).

    Is a Nikon.

    Bad Things:

Still lots of pixels for the wee sensor. The poo sensor may be better though (sorry...).

Zoom's a bit limited on the wide-end, but they all are on modern compacts. Plus, you don't need the wide end for illicit photographing of women's elbows etc.

Might be noisy at high ISO settings.

No 'RAW' shooting mode. Do you care? Do you even know what that means? RAW is for sad phucks who spend 3 hours tweaking everything in Photoshop to get the 'colour balance' and 'dynamic range' right. Who can be effing bothered?

The Kwanon doesn't have RAW either.

Will probably only cost £200 in three months time.

    Score: 9/10

    Advice: I'd buy the Nikon.

Thats it! Oh, and don't be kidded by the Powershot's 'Safety Zoom'; as it's 'dependent on image size selected' it sounds like just another digital zoom that will only work at lower resolution settings, using the 'extra' resolution to kid you into thinking it's good.

    THE END

    PS - Can I have a job.
    PPS - Help Me.

I spent months researching cameras before choosing the one I thought was right for me, and in two years I must have taken about 14 snaps, 13 of which were of my willy.

Yes, you can have a job. As long as you don't mind doing all the boring updates about cameras that are all the same for free, while I concentrate on the glamorous international thing-holding scene.

You shoot your load over a high mega pixel camera, then call people twats for wanting HD movies on Blu-ray or HD-DVD.

Why not stick with the old film type?

Why have camera makers decided we all need 3x zoom (+/- .5x)? There are more 3x cameras out there than ipod/iphone killers. I won't look at a camera if its not outside the cookie cutter 3x zoom.

Hey, that would be a good killer aka, the ipod killer, probably already taken and trademarked by some bloke in a dark and lonely office, disparately seeking a way out. Whoops. A little too close to the bone, that.

If you shoot your load over our new high megapixel camera you risk damaging the zoom mechanism. The Nikon standard warranty no longer covers this. Shoot responsibly.

On the other hand, there's no reviews of the P5000 yet, whereas there's loads of the A710IS, and they all say it's ace. They're right, too; I've got one and it's brilliant.

the amp HAS got a face. At first I thought it was a happy face, but now it seems like a sly face. It looks like it has seen something to it's left. It's definately up to something. You mark my words.

phorenzik is right! That's the face the amp makes after I've invited it around for tea and it says "yes I'd love to and I won't drop anything in your wine glass" and then when I turn to leave it pulls that face and self-selects sinister music.

    Bastard rapist amp.

What is the point of something this fecking huge? It's not a proper camera like a DSLR and it's not pop it in your sweatpants/Manbag/shirt pocket like a nice compact camera.

The result, a camera you leave at home most of the time because you are ashamed it's not a proper DSLR and you can't be arsed carrying about because it's not a proper compact.

I mean, come on, what sort of quality do you really need?

    Canon ixus for the w1n.

It's not that big. The lens retracts into the body, a bit like a Sumo wrestlers testicles. It's certainly not 'bridge-camera' size (for which your comments would better apply). It's really for DSLR users who want proper manual and semi-auto controls in a relatively small and light camera.

It is a tad pricey at the mo though. For another tonne you could get a D40 with kit lens.

Welcome to the ephotozine forums, btw...

I posted on a more recent post, then realised that the cam youre thinkin of getting is the one i just got!
I tried the Sony cybershot W50 (sorry)and it was terrible. Nicely designed, and tiny, but really noisy, and the noise reduction made it look like cheap phone cam mush. My last 2 cameras were cybershots and were ace, so im not just saying this as another Sony basher.
Took it back to jessops and swapped it for the Powershot A710IS. Its big and ugly, and takes (rechargeable) AAs, but has tons of settings and a 6X zoom, as well as an image stabiliser. There is some noise here and there, but its not really bad. Its colours are purdy and it... well - I dunno! I only got it today, and I cant experiment much cos I only got 1 set of non-rechargeable batts with it (panasonic, if youre intrested), and a paltry 16mb card. 8 Pictures! WOW!
Its got an excellent video mode. Dunno how many FPS it is, but its ultra smooth.

Seems good anyway. Id post my mail if you wanna contact me for some sample pics, but im scared the nutters will send me pictures of their genitals in 10MP
