Women working in a battery farm, 1943
This was sent in by a reader who has access to certain photographic libraries. It shows women working in a battery factory in 1943. You never hear that much about these brave 'Battery Girls' who helped the country stay powered up during the dark days of the war.

Of course, in those days we had to make do with powdered AAs and only half an ounce of 9v PP3 a week.
You had to be careful of the black market ones, I remember mother came home one day with a potato with to lollipop sticks in it, paid 1 and 6 for it she did. Father had to beat her mercilessly for 4 hours straight. We all had a good laugh about it though, had to in those days.
They all died of various cancers in their late 40s.

Hmmmm, breathing in all those lovely chemicals! Judging by how wonderful it is here in the UK today, makes you wonder if it never affected their offspring doesn't it?!

No wonder they worked so hard during the war !
