It doesn't necessarily have a battery. It could be kick started, the electrics would then run off the alternator while the engine is running.
It's very dangerous driving at night in Africa, because lots of drivers don't use their lights 'in case the battery runs out'. Er, right. I would have hoped you would know better, Idiot, what with the tech blog and all...
