Gadgets with FACES #89: A Tivoli Audio Model Three AM/FM clock radio

A gadget with a face AND reader-generated lifestyle photography AND some facts being put straight. Plus a technical demonstration of the T-Mobile G1's camera. This update works on so many levels.

"That Sennheiser clock-radio is, I'm afraid, a cheap knock-off of the Tivoli Series 3 clock-radio, which actually has a sad, mopey face even without turning it upside-down. I bring this to your attention so that people will know that there is a clock-radio that is a Serious Piece of Engineering that I paid too much money for, and that everyone who likes the cheap Taiwanese imitation ought to feel shamefully used. First thing in the morning. When they're not even fully awake yet.

"Here are some 'in the wild' photos of the Tivoli Series 3, for that extra gritty verisimilitude..."

"In the first one you can see a phone-charging cable, a copy of the New Yorker, a bottle of over-the-counter sleeping pills, and a dingy lamp."

"The second is taken from a bit closer, to show the sadness and anxiety. Sadness due to the reading material and sordid uncleanliness, anxiety because you can't even off yourself with those pills. The photos were taken with a cell-phone camera, but it's a G1 Google-phone, so maybe that will bring in a few readers, to see what a crap camera they've stuck on the G1" - RobotSlave.

That is one terrible camera on the G1. Thanks for unconvincing me to get one, Mr Slave!

Though he had defeated all of the people he now saw as his enemies, Arthas was still haunted by the ghost of Kel'Thuzad. Can tell it's a cack camera. It took 4 minutes to save the first picture before the second could be taken.

I do hope the alarm is set for 4.30 PM and not AM. Or is it set for 4.30 am cos that's time you need to kick her out?

I think it must be 430 PM. This is an idiot toys reader we're talking about here!

PS - is the clock radio jewish? It seems to have a skull cap above its head.

I feel a bit sorry for Arthas. Being haunted by a ghost is no laughing matter when you have elves to think of.
I'm glad he raised it here.

I'm still using the sony clock radio given to me as a christmas gift about 20 years ago.
Nothing quite so exhilarating as going to bed and trying to get to sleep knowing that you might be burned to death in your sleep when the battery backup fails...You don't know what you're missing

verify = fista - Another way of making bedtime more 'exhilarating'

I want an alarm clock with an adjustable display brightness. Not just high and low settings, mind, but proper adjustment. With a dial. Or maybe a slider.

Mine is on low but it's STILL like sleeping on the bridge of a nuclear submarine thats in 'silent running' mode, or in a tub of toxic waste from any superhero film that turns you into a mutant villain. It's shit.

ver - crave. Hmm.

I've had to sell on two LCD alarm clocks that turned out to be way too bright to sleep in the same room as.

I can't believe I've typed out such a dull fact.

The clock on the Tivoli Model 3 is so crap that it can't tell AM from PM, so the alarm, were it set, would be set for both. One of the little LEDs would be lit up if it were actually set, too. It's green, the little LED that lights up. The clock face is illuminated by a rather dim white LED. There's orange LED and another green LED to round things out. I'll try a photo with all of them illuminated, if the LED-aficionados here show enough interest.

those Tivoli radios - they're mono pisses all over most small stereo systems ive ever heard - and they have nice big knob to turn for the tuning too which is pleasant

"they are mono which pisses..."?
or
"their mono pisses..."
Hmmm.

I'm not going anywhere near "nice big knob to turn" though. Any takers?
Honestly, where's Bilal when you need him?

I vote for photos of various amounts of LED-illumination, make a nice change from boxes and tennis courts

a very belated typo correction - it's 'their mono' :p
